BookPortal ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application.

Information We Collect

We collect the minimum information necessary to provide you with a great reading experience:

Account Information: When you sign in with Apple, we receive your Apple user identifier and, optionally, your name. We do not receive or store your Apple ID email unless you choose to share it.
Reading Data: Books you add, reading sessions, page progress, and reading time are stored locally on your device.
Profile Information: Your display name, avatar color, friend code, level, and XP are stored on our servers to enable social features like friend connections.
Profile Photo: If you set a profile photo, it is stored only on your device and is never uploaded to our servers.

How We Use Your Information

To provide and maintain the BookPortal reading tracker
To enable social features (friend codes, invite links, friend lists)
To calculate and display your reading statistics, XP, and level
To authenticate your account

Data Storage and Security

Your reading data (books, sessions, progress) is stored locally on your device using secure storage. Profile data needed for social features is stored on our servers using encrypted database connections. We use industry-standard security measures to protect your data.

Third-Party Services

Apple Sign-In: We use Apple's authentication services. Apple's privacy policy applies to information processed by Apple.
Google Books API: We use the Google Books API to provide book search and metadata. Search queries are sent to Google's servers. Google's privacy policy applies.

Data Sharing

We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties. Your reading data stays on your device. Only the profile information necessary for social features (display name, level, reading stats) is visible to users you connect with as friends.

Data Retention

Your local reading data persists on your device until you delete the app. Server-side profile data is retained as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by contacting us.

Children's Privacy

BookPortal is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us so we can promptly remove it.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy within the app and updating the "Last updated" date.
